It was first settled as a Slavic village in the 7th Century. It became a prosperous ore and silver mining town in the 15th Century, and was the first city in Europe to join the Lutheran Reformation.
Today, it is known primarily as "car city," being the main location of many German automobile companies, including Audi and Volkswagen. It is also known for its history, downtown area, architecture, castle, and museums.
