Zakopane is a town in the southernmost area of Poland, close to the border of Slovakia, located in a valley in the Tatra Mountains. 

It was first mentioned in history in the 17th Century as "Zakopisko." 

Today, the town is known for its skiing, winter sports, mountains, lake, seasonal tourism, Christmas lights, and downtown area.

Zakopane in People's Lives

Joseph Conrad: I visited here with my family in 1914, bringing my wife Jessie and my two sons to a vacation here, wanting to show them my home country of Poland. We stayed at a hotel operated by my cousin Aniela. We stayed here for a handful of months, and had some difficulties getting back to England due to political tensions.
