Yale University is a private Ivy League research university located in New Haven, Connecticut. It was founded in 1701, making it the third-oldest university in the United States. It was the first American school to grant a Ph.D. in 1861.
With an endowment of $20.8 billion as of 2013, Yale is the second-wealthiest academic institution in the world. Though already a part of the Ivy League, Yale is included in what is colloquially known as "the true Ivies," which are Princeton, Yale, and Harvard.
Yale is frequently ranked among the top 10 top universities in the world, as well as one of the most beautiful campuses.
