The land was originally inhabited by the Leni Lenape Indians, and was traditionally a sacred resting ground where many Native Americans were buried. European settlement began with the creation of a township in 1716.

Joe Jonas: This is the town that I consider my childhood home, the place that I grew up. My family moved here in 1993, when I was four years old. I grew up with my older brother Kevin and my younger brother Nick, my best friends. We were homeschooled. In 1998, when I was 9 years old, we were overhead singing together in a barber shop, where my mother was getting her hair done. We happened to be overheard by a talent scout, who loved us. We were referred to a Broadway show manager, and already on the road to becoming international pop stars.
Kevin Jonas: After years of being shuffled about from place to place and state to state, my family moved and decided to settle down here around 1993, when I was about six years old. I grew up here happily, best of friends with my two younger brothers. My mother homeschooled us. In 1998, when I was 11 years old, my brothers and I were overheard singing in a barber shop where my mother was getting her hair done. A talent scout referred us to a Broadway show manager, and within no time we had become pop stars.
