Wilmington is a port city in southern North Carolina, the 8th-largest city in the state. Though Giovanni da Verrazzano was the first European to explore the area, in the early 16th Century, the Native American Algonquin tribe had inhabited the area for hundreds of years. The town was established in the 1720's.
Today, the city is known for the prescence of the Coast Guard, deeming it the nickname "Coast Guard City," its harbor and maritime economy, beaches, education, and entertaining arts.
