Wakefield is a town in the county of Yorkshire in northern England, located on the River Calder.

Roman settlement began in 43 AD, and founded as a town by the Anglo-Saxons in the 5th Century. During the 9th Century, the area was under Viking rule, and later was the site of an English manor.

Today, Wakefield is known for its cathedral with an unusually high tower, streets, history, castle ruins, and architecture.

Ian Watkins: After being sentenced for my crimes, I was moved to the HM Prison Wakefield here in 2013, to begin serving my sentence. I was transferred to another prison in South Littleton in 2014, in order to be closer to my mother, who had just undergone a kidney transplant.
