It was originally inhabited by the Chumash Native American Indians, who called the area "Shisholop," meaning, "in the mud." The first European contact was in 1729. It was settled in 1782 as a Franciscan mission, called Mission San Buenaventura.
Today, the city is known for its mix of small beach town and glamorous big city feel, city lights, beaches, surfing, pier, harbor, boating, and music scene.
