Vannes is a town in the department of Brittany in northwestern France, located at the mouths of two rivers, the Marle and the Vincin, 62 miles northwest of Nantes.
The town was founded around 150 BC, as a trading and market village. The name comes from a Celtic tribe, the Vaneti people. They were defeated by the Romans in 56 BC and slaughtered or sold into slavery. It later became a Saxon town, called "Gwened" and grew to further prominence in the 5th Century AD, when a diocese was established here.
Today, Vannes is known for its pictaresque beauty, gardens, architecture, history, and downtown area.
