The University of Alabama is a public research university located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It is one of the oldest and largest universities in Alabama. It is among the top 10 American universities in terms of college sports teams.

It was founded in 1820 as a theological seminary, and at the time, Tuscaloosa was the state capital. The campus design and architecture was inspired by Thomas Jefferson's University of Virginia. The university's first classes were not held, however, until 1831.
