Through his son's marriage, Boleyn was the father-in-law of Jane Boleyn, Viscountess Rochford.

Boleyn served as a diplomat for King Henry VIII, and was a favorite in good favor with the king. The king knighted him in 1509, as soon as he took the throne.

Boleyn escorted Margaret Tudor from Richmond Palace in London to Scotland, for her marriage to James IV of Scotland. The elder sister of the king, it was an important mission and a high honor for Boleyn to be chosen to command.

While on a diplomatic mission to the Low Countries, Boleyn met Margaret of Austria, Duchess of Savoy. Their shared languages of French and Latin was the basis for a friendship between them, and Margaret later accepted his daughter Anne Boleyn into her household.

Boleyn accompanied Thomas More and Thomas Wolsey on a diplomatic mission to Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, in 1521.

Boleyn was one of the three judges who condemned Thomas More to death in 1535, after a fifteen minute trial.
