John Woodbridge

Stanton Fitzwarren in People's Lives

John Woodbridge: I was born here in 1613, the son of a respected reverend. I was the sixth of my name in my family, and all five other John Woodbridge's before me had been ministers. The first of them had been a follower of John Wycliffe in the 14th Century, and this family lore was repeated constantly to me growing up - something that all of us were immensely proud of. The fact that I would grow up to become an equally respected reverend was never doubted by anyone. Around 1631, at the age of 18, I left this town to study at the University of Oxford.
