Long before European contact, the area was inhabited by Native Americans, beginning around 900 AD. The city of today was founded in 1764 by Auguste Chouteau, and named in honor of Louis IX of France. During the late 18th Century, the city belonged to Spanish Louisiana, but after the Louisiana Purchase, it rose in wealth and prominence to emerge as one of the major port cities on the Mississippi River.
Today, St. Louis is known for its struggles to overcome economic setbacks, signature arch, skyline, proximity to Illinois, riverfront, port, economy, sports, and downtown area.
