South Orange is a town in northeastern New Jersey, considered part of the greater New York metropolitan area. It is located 20 miles west of Manhattan and 5 miles west of Newark, of which it is a suburb.

The land was purchased from the Lenni Lenape Indians in 1666, and the site of this future town was known as the "Uplands" of Newark. The town was founded as a farm in 1677, then called "Chestnut Hills." It was later named in honor of William III of England, also known as William of Orange.

Today, South Orange is known for its quirkiness and unique charm, with features including a Tudor-style Village Hall and vintage gas street lights. It is also recognized for its downtown area, different architecture, and suburban neighborhoods.
