Skaftafell is an area in southeast Iceland. It is not a town or city, but rather a preservation area that lies inside the Vatnajokull National Park. Before being included in the Vatnajokull, it was previously a farm, a manor estate, and a park of its own.

The area was settled around the 12th Century as an agricultural community, but the town was wiped out by a volcanic eruption in 1362. After that, the area took on the nickname "Oraefi," meaning "wasteland," a name that it has retained even up to modern times.

Today, Skaftafell is known for its gorgeous natural beauty, ice caves, frozen lakes, glaciers, waterfalls, mountains, nearby volcano, wildlife, and historic farmhouses.
