It was founded sometime before the 17th Century.

Saumur, located between two rivers, is the location of some of the finest vineyards in France. It is also known for its castle and as the location of an elite horseback riding academy.

William Penn: After living in Paris and finding myself disgusted and overwhelmed by the opulence of the French court, I was relieved to be invited to live here with a Quaker friend in 1664. I lived here briefly before returning to London, unaware that the Plague was about to strike the city.
