San Remo is the largest town on Phillip Island, an island off the southeastern coast of Australia belonging to the state of Victoria. Though the most notable town on the island, San Remo is still a small town, with approximately 1,020 inhabitants.

The land was originally inhabited for centuries by the Bunurong people. The first European contact was by seal hunters in the 1820's. The town was established by a Scottish immigrant in 1835.

Today, San Remo is known as a quiet vacation destination, as well as for its maritime activities and economy, port, boating, fishing, surfing, and monument to lost sailors and fishermen.

San Remo in People's Lives

Liam Hemsworth: My family and I moved here in 2003, when I was 13 years old, from Melbourne. I spent my teenage years here, and spent much time surfing with my older brothers. I also began participating in school plays, following in my brother's footsteps. As a teenager, my first job was laying floors with my brothers, which I did for six months. I decided to pursue acting, and attended my first audition in 2006, when I was 16 years old. I began getting roles on major Australian soap operas and TV shows. I was originally chosen to play a part in the movie The Expendables in 2009, but my part was written out of the script. Hours after getting the call that I would not be appearing in The Expendables, I got a call saying that I was one of the few actors being seriously considered for the leading role in the film Thor. However, the other actor being considered was my older brother, Chris. In the end, I lost the role to my brother. After this, I decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue my acting career, and made the move in March of 2009.
