Salamanca is a city in the community of Castile y Leon in northwestern Spain. Its Old City area is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is located 50 miles east of the Portuguese border, and is home to the University of Salamanca - the oldest university in Spain and the fourth oldest university in the Western world. The large number of foreign students who reside in the city gives it a diverse, worldly population.

The city was founded by a Celtic tribe around the 4th Century BC, and later was under the rule of the Romans and, later, the Moors.

Today, Salamanca is known for its university, architecture, history, diverse blend of world culture, squares and public places, palaces and large villas, churches and cathedrals, tourism, and beauty.
