The town was established as an Arabic Muslim colony in 890 AD. The building of fortifications and a manor house in the Middle Ages increased the town's population, but it remained mainly a fishing village until the early 20th Century, when it seemed that everything in the town turned to gold. It came to the attention of movie stars and celebrities, and was soon famous for its celebrity sightings and as being one of the first fashionable destinations for the wealthy jet setters. It is named after Torpes of Pisa.
Today, Saint Tropez is known for its wealth, vacationers, luxury, tropical climate, ports, riviera, maritime activities, high end shopping, music, beaches, history, architecture, hotels, and beauty.
