It was discovered and settled by Spanish explorers sometime between 1799 and 1832, who claimed that the surrounding land was so beautiful, they compared it to the Holy Sacrament, which is where its name came from.
Today, Sacramento is known for its history, particularly during the California Gold Rush, transportation, education, and diversity. It was named "America's Most Diverse City" by Time Magazine in 2002.
