Rio de Janeiro in People's Lives

Adriana Lima: I often visit this city for modeling work and events. I did a photoshoot for the Pirelli Calendar here in 2005, shot by Patrick Demarchelier.

Hunter S. Thompson: I lived in this city for three months in 1962, as a correspondant for the National Observer. I also picked up another job here, as a reporter for the Brazil Dailyspaper. While visiting this city in (find date), I first came across the book The Great Gatsby in a bookshop here. In Portuguese, its title read "O Grande Gatsby," which struck me as musical. My longtime girlfriend, Sondi, traveled to join me here.

Walt Disney: I was sent here on a filming mission by the U.S. Government in 1941, in an effort to improve relations with South America. I loved this city, and laid on the beach for hours filming. I also went on bike rides, explored the botanical gardens and waterfalls, enjoyed some local nightclubs, and kept myself busy sketching. I met the President of Brazil, Getulio Vargas. The film portions of this city, shown across the United States, portrayed Brazilians in fashionable clothing hurrying amongst a beautiful, busy city full of skyscrapers, which many Americans found surprising. The films were instrumental in changing the American general public's perception of South America.

Zuzanna Bijoch: I visited this city in 2014, for a high fashion photo shoot with photographer Zee Nunes.
