Victoria, Queen of England: I visited here in 1835 with my mother and John Conroy, and fell seriously ill will typhoid fever. Conroy and my mother, the Duchess, exploited my weakened state and put forward an image to the public that I was weak and sickly. They attempted to have me sign documents handing the regency to them until I was 21, while delirious. After the fever passed, I emerged hardened and furious at them, more determined than ever to take the throne alone, fully independent.
