Portsmouth is a town in southeastern New Hampshire in the United States.

The first European to explore the area was Martin Pring in 1603, who also wrote about the land. This led to English colonization of the town in 1630, then named Strawbery Banke after all of the wild strawberries growing there. Portsmouth was officially founded, however, in 1652, and named after Portsmouth, England.

Today, Portsmouth is known for its quaint New England character, brick buildings, pictaresque downtown area, bridge, and harbor.
