Plovdiv is the second-largest city in Bulgaria after Sofia, and the tenth-largest city in the Balkans. It is located in south-central Bulgaria on the Maritsa River. It is at times nicknamed "City of Seven Hills" due to its rolling and mountainous terrain.

One of the world's oldest cities, Plovdiv was first settled in the Neolithic Era, around 4000 BC. It soon became a central Thracian city, and later fell to the Macedonian Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantine Empire, Ottoman Empire, and later Bulgaria.

Today, it is known for its ancient history, Roman ruins and theaters, riverfront, downtown area, culture, events, and architecture.
