James was a close and longtime friend of fellow mystery writer Ruth Rendell.

James served as a guest editor on BBC radio in 2009, and conducted an interview with Mark Thompson, Director General of the BBC. She was critical of some of his decisions. She did such an amazing job with the interview that Evan Davis said "She shouldn't be guest editing, she should be permanently presenting."
