Oshawa is a city in the province of Ontario in southeastern Canada, about 35 miles east of Toronto, situated on Lake Ontario. Its name is derived from the Ojibwa word for "across."

The city originated as a French trading post in 1760, though trading had ocurred there long before that, mainly in furs transferred between Native Americans and Europeans. Later in the 18th Century, the town grew wealthy as a major location in the exportation of salmon.

Today, Oshawa is best known for its history, economy, and automobile industry.
