Ofunato is a coastal town in northeastern Japan.

The area has been settled since about 12,000 BC, though the modern town was only officially founded in 1889. Ofunato was heavily hit by the Valdivia Tsunami in 1960, and many parts of the town were rebuilt. The town was completely destroyed, however, in 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami. It is still being rebuilt.

Today, Ofunato is known for its fishing industry, port, beaches surrounded by mountains, and for the damage it has sustained during disasters.
