Ninevah was a former city in ancient Assyria, the capitol of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, during which time it was the largest city in the world for about 50 years.

The area was settled around 6000 BC, and by 3000 BC was one of the most powerful cities in the ancient world.

Today, it is uninhabited, but lies across the Tigris River from the city of Mosul.
