Newport in People's Lives
Charles Hector d'Estaing: I planned at attack of British ships harbored here in 1778, but was forced to go back to open water after complications.
Henry James: After going back and forth between various cities in Europe and the United States for the past five years, my family settled in this city in 1860, when I was 17 years old. Here, I befriended painter John la Farge, and became more well read and varied in my studies. I especially began to admire French literature, most notably the work of Honore de Balzac, who greatly impacted me "more than any other writer." In the fall of 1861, I was helping to fight a fire, and injured my back. This injury lingered with me for the rest of my life, and also made me unfit for service when I attempted to enlist as a soldier in the Civil War. In 1864, my family moved to Boston, when I was 21 years old.
