It was founded in approximately the 10th Century and is believed to have been a Welsh government seat in the early Middle Ages. The modern town of today, however, was founded in 1294 after Welsh inhabitants of the nearby town of Llanmaes were evicted by Edward I.
Today, much of Newborough's land consists not of homeland for people, but rather for wildlife. Much of the area surrounding the tiny downtown area is a nature reserve, making it a popular destination for biologists, naturalists, and those studying birds, wildlife, geology, and so on. Newborough is also known for its sweeping sand dunes, the lush 2,000 acre Newborough Forest, its beach, kitesurfing, and a beloved location of Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers, adding a romantic lure to the town.
