The National University of San Marcos, in Spanish Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, is one of the most elite and prestigious universities in Peru, consistently ranked either number 1 or number 2 in the country. It is located in Lima. It is the oldest officially established university in the Americas, and one of the oldest universities in the world. In addition to its university, San Marcos also operates the National History Museum and a cultural center.
It was established in 1551 by royal decree of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, and has been in continuous operation ever since.
