Montgomery is the state capitol of Alabama in the southeastern United States, located on the Alabama River. It is the second-largest city in Alabama after Birmingham.

It was founded in 1819 and named after Richard Montgomery.

The city is known for its close ties with African American and Civil Rights history, its military presence, and its manufacturing plants.

Vinnie Ream: I moved here for my husband's military job, around 1880. Back in Washington D.C., I had been renowned as one of the most successful female sculpters in the world. Here, people did not seem to pay much attention to sculpting.
