USA Arches NP Delicate Arch(1)
Moab is a town in southern Utah, the home of many beautiful rock formations, mountains, and arches.

The area was first settled in 1855 as a trading fort for settlers traveling farther west. It is believed that the town's name is derived from the Biblical "Moab," or possibly from the Paiute Indian word "moapa," meaning "mosquito." The inhabitants of the town seem to actually hope that it is the latter, as in the Bible, Moabites were known for idolatry and incest. In 1890, fifty-nine petitioners demanded that the name be changed to "Vina." It wasn't, and neither was a later request to change the town's name to "Uvadalia."

Today, Moab still has its original name, and is best known for its canyons, parks, mountains, arches, and red sandstone rocks. It is a known destination for Western horseback trail riding, mountain biking, and Jeep safaris. It has also been the set location of a number of Western films throughout Hollywood's history.
