Minneapolis is the largest city in Minnesota, located in the southeast of the state on the Mississippi River. It has a very close relationship with the capital city of St. Paul, and the two are often considered a single city - referred to as "the Twin Cities," or "Minneapolis-St. Paul." Together, the two cities make up the 16th largest metropolitan area in the United States.
The land was inhabited by the Dakota Sioux Indians until the arrival of French explorers in 1680. Settlement began around 1820, and it was officially recognized as a city in 1867, when a railroad line was built between Minneapolis and Chicago, greatly improving the city's economy.
Today, Minneapolis is known for its large size, relationship and closeness with St. Paul, city skyline, metropolitan atmosphere, riverfront, and business district.
