Beginning in 1917, Collins began working closely with Arthur Griffith, who was the editor and publisher of The United Irishman, a major nationalist newspaper. Collins had read the paper avidly since he was a young boy, and was honored to work under Griffith.

Collins worked as a colleague with Eamon de Valera.

Collins met George Bernard Shaw in 1922. The writer was greatly impressed with him, and the two men would have most likely become good friends, but Collins was assassinated only three days later.
