Matamata is a small town in northern New Zealand, located at the base of the Kaimai Ranges. It was founded as a mission town in 1835 by an English minister.
Today, Matamata consists mainly of rolling green hillsides and farmland. It is known for its breeding of Thoroughbred horses, as well as being the location of "Hobbiton," a filming set for the Lord of the Rings movies, which is kept intact today as a popular tourist destination.
