Marrakech is the third-largest city in Morocco, after Casablanca and Rabat. Located in central Morocco, it is located north of the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. It is one of the country's four former Imperial cities, or, those built by the Berber Empire.

The land has been inhabited by Berber farmers since Neolithic times, but the actual city was founded in 1062 by Abu Bakr ibn Umar, and quickly developed into a center of religion, education, and trading.

Today, Marrakech is known for its beauty, rich culture, history, souks, marketplaces, signature mint iced tea, hot climate, thriving economy, tourism, architecture, hotels, and for its maze-like city layout.

Marrakech in People's Lives

Jake Gyllenhaal: I traveled here in 2006 to film scenes of the movie Rendition

Jared Leto: I traveled here in 2003 to film scenes of the movie Alexander

Romola Garai: I traveled here in 2013 with my boyfriend Sam Hoare and our 10-month old baby as a vacation away from any and all technology. I stayed at the lovely 18th-Century Riad el Fenn and enjoyed croissants, coffee, mint tea and rice. I explored the city, took a Moroccan cooking class, bartered with fruit vendors, and went to a spa for a traditional mud skin treatment. I absolutely adored this city and fell completely in love with it - promising to come back again, and, next time, leave fatter. Of the chef I met during my cooking class, I said "I was seconds away from offering to move to Marrakech to go into the restaurant business together."
