Machala is a city in southwestern Ecuador, located on the Gulf of Guayaquil. It is the 4th largest city in the country, and is sometimes nicknamed "Banana Capital of the World" for its wealth of banana plantations and high output of the fruit.

It was founded by Spanish conquistadors in 1573. Today, the city is known for its downtown area, shopping districts, bananas, port, agriculture, coffee and cocoa growing, and beaches.
