Luneberg is a town in the state of Lower Saxony in northern Germany. It is 28 miles southeast of Hamburg and considered part of the Hamburg Metropolitan Area.

The city was first mentioned in history in 956, but there is evidence that the area has been inhabited since the Stone Age.

Luneberg was once a major city in the salt industry, and is still sometimes referred to as "Salt Town." It is known as a university town, and for its typically German architecture and historic downtown area.
