It was first settled in 1699, when a large group from Newark wanted to move westward. The land was purchased from the Lenni Lenape Indians. However, the contract was not clearly defined, and land disputes between the settlers and the Lenni Lenape continued until the 1740's. The town is named after William Livingston, the first Governor of New Jersey.
Today, Livingston is known for its soothing suburban atmosphere and downtown area.
