Originally, the land of Lawrence was inhabited by the Shawnee Indians, and later the Oregon Trail passed through here. The actual town was established in 1854 by a group of organized Massachusetts settlers seeking to live further west. It was named in honor of Amos Adams Lawrence.
Today, Lawrence is known for its universities, fall colors, similarities to a New England town, architecture, impressive castle-like courthouse, and beauty.
