Karlsruhe is a city in the state of Baden-Wurttemburg in southwestern Germany, the second largest in its state. It is located on the border of France.
While on a hunting trip, Charles III William, Margrave of Baden-Durlach, had a dream about founding a new city here, and did so in 1715, with the new city's main feature being the palace. The city was later used as an inspiration and model for Washington D.C.
Today, Karlsruhe is known for its grand architecture, cathedral, palace, various castles, university, Court of Justice, zoo, and for its layout, with streets that radiate out from the palace.
