Kabul is the capital and largest city of Afghanistan, located in the northeast of the country in the Hindu Kush Mountains on the Kabul River. It is the 64th largest city in the world, and the 5th fastest growing city in the world.

It was established as the ancient fortress of Bala Hissar in the 5th Century BC, and as it grew to wealth and strength, it became a much sought-after map point for many empires. Though the city is, today, known for its political unrest and violence, it was a relatively safe and peaceful city until about 1992.

Today, Kabul has been changed forever, with many of its buildings and architectural works destroyed by war. It is known for its reslilience, blend of cultures, cuisine, re-building efforts, outbreaks of violence, and former, lost beauty.

Kabul in People's Lives

Ian McEwan: I traveled here in 1974, after graduating with a master's degree from the University of East Anglia. I stayed here for a year, still often writing back home to my girlfriend Penny, and writing.

Jude Law: I traveled here in July of 2007 to film a documentary, and support world peace. While here, we interviewed government officials, UN officials, community leaders, and children. I returned here in August of 2008 to meet the President of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai and promote world peace, and screened the documentary that I had created.

Milo Ventimiglia: I traveled here in 2008 with the United Service Organization, to visit with and support troops serving in Afghanistan. Since then, I have been active with the Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of American program, launched a national public service campaign on veteran's behalf, and created the website
