Joseph married a Spanish Infanta, Mariana Victoria of Spain, in 1729.

Through his marriage, Joseph was the son-in-law of Philip V of Spain and Elisabeth Farnese.

Joseph was the brother-in-law of Ferdinand VI of Spain.

Joseph's second-in-command and most trusted confidante was Sebastiao Jose de Carvalho e Melo. He relied on Melo so heavily, and left him so much power, that in fact much of Joseph's reign was actually the reign of Melo, if not in name. 

Joseph was the godfather of Marie Antoinette.
