Jersey City is the second-most populated city in the state of New Jersey after Newark, and is considered part of the New York metropolitan area. The city lies directly across the Hudson River from Lower Manhattan. It is a major American port of entry, and the city posesses 11 miles of waterfront.

The land of the present-day Jersey City was formerly inhabited by the Delaware Native American Indians. The city was founded by the Dutch East India Company in 1630, though building did not truly begin until 1633.

Today, Jersey City is known for its proximity, rivalry, and close relationship with New York, as well as for its waterfront, import and export business, history, downtown area, fast rate of growth, and skyline.
