Modern Istanbul skyline
Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey and the third largest city in the world by population within the city limits. Sprawling across the crowded Bosphorus Strait and located in between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara, it is located on the borderline of two different continents, Europe and Asia. It is often considered to be a part of three areas, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, and a triple gateway between all of them.

The city was founded in 660 B.C. by Greek settlers, and named Byzantium. It was also later the powerful city of Constantinople.

Istanbul in People's Lives

Adriana Lima: I travel here often, being quite a popular model in Turkey. I appeared on the Turkish Deal or No Deal TV show and donated my prize money to children fighting leukemia in this city.

Agatha Christie: I accompanied by husband here on archaeological digs, and spent time writing. One of my most famous books, Murder on the Orient Express, was written while I was here.

Gustave Flaubert: I traveled here in 1850, at the age of 28. I spent five weeks here.

Liam Neeson: I traveled here in 2011 to film scenes of the movie Taken 2. We filmed at the Grand Bazaar.

Marko Jaric: On the Yugoslavian national team, I played in the EuroBasket 2001 Championship, which my team won. We defeated the native Turkish team with a 78 - 69 score.

Ralph FiennesI traveled here in 2011 to film scenes of the movie Skyfall.

Samuel Morse: I traveled here by invitation to visit Abdulmecid I, Sultan of Turkey, at the old Beylerbeyi Palace in 1847. The Sultan tested the telegraph personally, and we struck up a friendship. He officially granted me a patent for the invention, the culmination of a hard-won legal battle.

Viktoria Tolstoy: I performed a concert here in 2014, with Jacob Karlzon. An old lady in a red hat danced, trance-like, near the stage.

Zenobia: I conquered this city in 270, before it was a city, and simply a town called Chalcedon.

Zuzanna Bijoch: I visited here in 2013.
