Ho Chi Minh is the largest city in Vietnam, located in the southeast of the country.

It originated as a tiny fishing village named "Prey Nokor," meaning "Forest City," founded around 1000 BC. It later became the powerful city of "Saigon," and was eventually renamed in honor of Ho Chi Minh.

Today, Ho Chi Minh is known for its beauty, city skyline, glamorous lights, skyscrapers, expensive way of life, temples, gardens, and large size.

Ho Chi Minh in People's Lives

Hunter S. Thompson: I traveled here as a reporter for the Rolling Stone magazine in 1975, being sent to cover what had appeared to be the end of the Vietnam War. However, once I arrived, I found the city to be in chaos, with every other journalist and expatriate fleeing the country. I also found out that, while I had been traveling here, the editor at Rolling Stone had decided to abandon the mission, and had stopped sending me funds or aid of any kind. I was left stranded here without health insurance or money. I witnessed the Fall of Saigon, and wrote a rare article on it, but did not allow it to be published in Rolling Stone until ten years later. After this horrific experience, I had a falling out with the editor, and stopped contributing to Rolling Stone except on rare occasions.
