Durrell was the younger brother of writer Lawrence Durrell. It was Lawrence who encouraged Gerald to begin writing.

Durrell was a friend of David Attenborough, and worked on a conversation project with him in 1989.

Durrell was a friend of Anne, Princess Royal. She helped to fund his zoo, and publically endorsed it as a patron.

Durrell was a friend of cricketer David Gower.
