Georgetown is a the second-largest seaport in South Carolina, and the third oldest city in South Carolina. It was first settled in 1526 by Spanish settlers and their African slaves.

Washington Allston: I was born here in 1779. My mother owned a rice plantation, and though my father had passed away in the Revolutionary War a few months before, my step-father was the son of a wealthy shipping merchant. I was named after George Washington, who at the time of my birth was at the height of celebrity.
