Gary is a large town in northwestern Indiana, often considered part of the Chicago metropolitan area and located 25 miles from that city. In 2010, its population fell by a sharp decline of 55%, creating an economic crisis and many buildings, homes, and areas of the city to become abandoned and falling into a chaos of disrepair, resembling a ghost town. This has also created a significant rise of crime and poverty rates in the city. Despite its population downturn, it remains the ninth-largest city in the state of Indiana.

It was founded in 1906 by a steel corporation, in order to be the headquarters of their steel plant. The city went through a period of uproar during the steel strike in 1919, and 4,000 federal troops had to be sent here to quell the rioters. The city's gradual downward spiral increased in the 1960's, when civil unrest began and crime increased.

Today, Gary is known for its ghost-town appearance, crime rate, poverty, slums, ruined buildings, and as the birthplace of the Jackson 5.
