Freiberg is a town in the state of Saxony in eastern Germany. It lies in the Ore Mountains; the Ore Mountain Mining Range is currently being considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The town was founded in 1180 and, for nearly a millenium, was a center for mining and smelting.

When its mining days officially ended in 1969, Freiberg sought to reassign itself to the specialty of high technology, particularly semiconductors and solar technology. It is now known for its mining history, mountain range, metallurgy university - the oldest in the world, and architecture.
